Winter Riding: Dealing with Corrosion - RSR Moto

Winter Riding: Dealing with Corrosion

Riding a motorcycle in winter exposes both the bike to a greatly increased risk of corrosion from moisture in the air, and salt and water on the road. In this article, we'll explore effective strategies to mitigate these hazards, with a focus on the benefits of using titanium bolts and nuts for enhanced corrosion resistance.

Preventing Corrosion:

1. Regular Cleaning: Wash your motorcycle regularly (ideally after every ride) to remove salt and grime. Pay special attention to the underside and other areas where salt and moisture accumulate. Use an all-in-one motorcycle cleaner as it will be effective on grease and oil as well as road film and salt. Don't use washing up liquid because it contains salt.

2. Use Protective Coatings: Apply anti-corrosion sprays or waxes to exposed metal surfaces. These coatings create a barrier against moisture and salt. You can't use them anywhere they are likely to find their way onto your brakes. That means disc bolts, caliper bolts, and banjo bolts are among the first parts to show the effects of corrosion.

3. Cover Your Motorcycle: When not in use, keep your motorcycle covered to protect it from moisture and dirt. The cover should be well ventilated to reduce the risk of condensation forming and creating further problems. Store your bike in a dry garage or shed if you can.

Over the years, I've found that not matter what you do, the salt always gets to your bike in the end.

The Role of Titanium Bolts and Nuts

One effective way to combat corrosion is by replacing rusty and corroded fasteners with titanium bolts and nuts. Titanium, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, is an ideal material for motorcycle components exposed to harsh winter conditions.

Advantages of Titanium Fasteners:

1. Superior Corrosion Resistance: Unlike steel or aluminium, titanium is highly resistant to corrosion from salt and moisture, making it perfect for winter use.

2. Strength and Durability: Titanium offers high strength and durability, ensuring that your motorcycle's critical components remain secure in all conditions.<

3. Lightweight: Being lighter than steel, titanium bolts can contribute to a minor reduction in overall vehicle weight, which can be beneficial for handling.

Replacing Fasteners with Titanium:

1. Assess and Identify: Check your motorcycle for any signs of rust or corrosion, particularly focusing on fasteners.

2. Choose Quality Titanium Replacements: Opt for high-grade titanium bolts and nuts from reputable suppliers like RSR Moto

3. Installation: Consider professional assistance for replacing fasteners, or if you're doing it yourself, ensure you follow the correct torque specifications.

You'll need to take extra care of your bike if you're riding it in the winter. By taking steps to address the challenges of cold temperatures and corrosion, you can enjoy winter rides safely or store your motorcycle with peace of mind. Upgrading to titanium bolts and nuts is a smart investment, enhancing both the performance and longevity of your bike through the toughest months.
